Newsletter

October 2023

Welcome to our last

ScreenME newsletter!

Unbelievable. This is actually our last newsletter for the ScreenME project. Our international consortium has all been about networking for improving teaching, research, and stakeholder engagement in the area of screen media entrepreneurship. We have been very grateful that our activities have been funded by EU’s Horizon2020 (grant agreement 952156) for the last three years. But also this funding is coming to an end, we have kicked off many activities that will continue after the project.

Some of us are in the new HorizonEurope funding CresCine (101094988). Others are in the joint Chance project PSM AP  Other grant applications are being written at the moment. We will continue to collaborate in various different forms. Joint publications will be out (look out for the Journal of Media Business Studies), and not to forget the ScreenME podcast that will continue after the end of the project.

What have we learned through ScreenME? That collaboration matters. That they are not only enjoyable but also useful. Within our consortium we talked so much about how to manage research, including research grant applications, how best to support early-stage researchers,b how to teach entrepreneurship, how best to engage industry and policymakers stakeholder. These sharing of knowledge and the discussions are so crucial. Yet, when we as academics convene at academic conferences, we hardly, if ever speak about these topics. The project gave us the chance to do do. It has been enriching for all of us, not at least also since we are a very diverse group of partners, with each bringing special expertise to the table. We are happy that we can share our learnings with you through our public deliverables.

In this final newsletter, we share with you our journey for our last year.

Thank you for being a part of the ScreenME journey

Nägemiseni, Näkemiin, auf Wiedersehen, hejdå, farvel, tot ziens, Slán go foill  and good-bye.

In mid-September Tallinn University in Estonia, organized an international conference expertly moderated by Ulrike Rohn, who serves as the lead for ScreenMe consortium  and holds the position of Professor of Media Management and Economics at Tallinn University. This conference proved to be a remarkable platform where the future of the screen media industry was unveiled through engaging panel discussions and enlightening keynote presentations. This conference proved to be an exceptional platform where experts delved into the future of the screen media industry through engaging panel discussions and enlightening keynote presentations. What set this event apart was its unique format, seamlessly blending academic discourse with industry insights.

The standout feature of this conference was its impressive lineup of speakers, hailing from diverse backgrounds. Among these distinguished individuals were accomplished CEOs representing both established corporations and innovative startups, cutting-edge scientists leading the way in media research, and influential policymakers. ScreenMe team developed a new syllabus for  entrepreneurship

The ScreenMe team around Ulrike Rohn (Tallinn University), Thomas Cyron (Jönköping International Business School, Sweden) and Britta Gossel (Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, Germany) developed a new syllabus for an entrepreneurship course at Tallinn University.

This English-language course was offered to MA students at Tallinn University’s Baltic Film, Media and Arts School (BFM) for a first time in the autumn term of 2022 with 14 Estonian and international students enrolled. After being a success with the students, the course is now offered again in the autumn term of 2023, with a double intake in students.

Enrolled in MA study programs focusing on media and communication at BFM, students in this course are exposed to an entrepreneurial mindset and equipped with tools essential for entrepreneurial processes.

ScreenME reports that we want to highlight

During the cause of our ScreenME project, we have worked on output that is publicly available. The aim of the ScreenME project was to enhance scholarship in the are of screen media entreprenership, including reserach, teaching, and stakeholder engagement.

Key publicly available deliverables that we are happy to highlight here are:

A comprehensive report consolidating our collective experiences and future visions concerning industry-university collaboration

A policy brief on best practices on R&D networking

A report documenting our shared experiences and forward-looking visions pertaining to the development of early-stage researchers

Preparing these deliverables has been enlightening for us. The ScreenME project prompted discussions  not only on early-stage researcher development practices, stakeholder collaboration, but also on research management and teaching practices. Frequently, we as university researchers convene to share our research results, while often not speaking about these crucial topics. Hence, the experience was particularly interesting for us, and we hope that others find our compiled reports helpful.

ScreenMe-Net collaborated in and co-initiated new projects

The collaboration between the ScreenMe project and like-minded projects has proven to be highly beneficial. Particularly notable is the partnership with the C-Accelerate project. C-Accelerate operates within the FilmEU Cosmos, an alliance that encompasses various training, education, research, and innovation projects, reinforcing the FilmEU programmatic approach and playing a central role in the development of the European University of Film and Media Arts. The central objective of C-Accelerate is to progressively integrating entrepreneurship into the core ecosystem of the future European University. The exchange of entrepreneurial teaching experiences has significantly enriched the ScreenME project.

In addition to these collaborations, ScreenME members have initiated new projects. CresCine, involving Tallinn University, Aarhus University, and Munster Technological University, focuses on understanding and supporting the international competitiveness of the European film industry. The project PSM AP  that ScreenME’s Aarhus University and Vrije Universiteit Brussels are part of, explores how public service media organisations, regulators and policymakers are adapting to a new platform age dominated by the likes of Netflix, YouTube, Apple and Amazon. Furthermore, a longstanding partnership between LUT University, Jönköping University, and Tallinn University exists within the Media Contradictions project, addressing the question of whether media can be both sustainable and profitable.

Currently, there are additional project applications in progress. It is evident that our involvement in the ScreenME project has significantly deepened our understanding of media, entrepreneurship within the media landscape, and the teaching of entrepreneurship.

Tallinn University invites students to its Screen Media and Innovation MA programm

Closely connected to the ScreenME project is the 2-year English-language MA study programm Screen Media and Innovation tthat is offered at Tallinn University’s Baltic Film, Media and Arts School and that is led by Professor Ulrike Rohn. This program encourages students to engage in a challenge focused on discovering innovations in the realm of screen media that contribute to the attainment of sustainable development goals. The pedagogical approach involves project- and problem-based learning.
